Assemble minimal OCI images from declarative package configs with apko

SkillCloud & infra

This skill adds the ability to build minimal OCI images, the standard image format used by container tools, from declarative package configs. Instead of following a conventional Dockerfile flow, the AI works from a simple manifest that lists the packages an image should contain. The result is a small image whose contents are easy to review, which helps when supply-chain clarity matters.

What your AI can do with it

  • Build small OCI images from declarative package manifests
  • Define image contents in a readable package config instead of a Dockerfile
  • Keep images limited to the exact packages listed in the manifest
  • Review what went into an image to support supply-chain clarity

What this skill tells your AI

The instructions your AI receives, as published by agentskillexchange/skills in skills/assemble-minimal-oci-images-from-declarative-package-configs-with-apko/SKILL.md and read by Ahel’s review.

Use apko to build small OCI images from declarative package manifests when supply-chain clarity and minimal contents matter more than a conventional Dockerfile flow.

Prerequisites

apko and access to the package sources and OCI output destination you intend to use

Installation

Use the upstream install or setup path that matches your environment:

  • brew install apko
  • go install chainguard.dev/apko@latest
  • docker run cgr.dev/chainguard/apko version
  • docker run -v "$PWD":/work cgr.dev/chainguard/apko build examples/alpine-base.yaml apko-alpine:edge apko-alpine.tar

Requirements and caveats from upstream:

  • or, with Docker:
  • You can then load the generated tar image into a Docker environment:
