Enable keyboard navigation for all elements

SkillDev tools

Keyboard navigation is a skill for AI agents that helps check whether web pages and UI components work fully with just a keyboard. It covers keyboard accessibility, focus management, and shortcuts. When your agent uses this skill, it can inspect and improve how users move through an interface without a mouse.

What your AI can do with it

  • Check that all interactive elements are reachable with the Tab key
  • Verify that focus order follows a logical sequence
  • Identify missing or incorrect focus indicators
  • Test that keyboard shortcuts do not conflict with browser or assistive technology
  • Suggest fixes for focus traps and skipped elements

Getting started

  1. Make sure your agent environment supports skills and can run accessibility checks.
  2. Add the keyboard-navigation skill to your agent's available skills.
  3. Point the agent at a web page or UI component you want to test.
  4. Ask the agent to run a keyboard navigation check and report issues.

What this skill tells your AI

The instructions your AI receives, as published by a5c-ai/babysitter in library/specializations/web-development/skills/keyboard-navigation/SKILL.md and read by Ahel’s review.

15% of users rely on keyboard navigation—broken focus order or keyboard traps make your site completely unusable for them.

Quick Reference

  • All interactive elements must be reachable via Tab key
  • Focus order should follow visual reading order (left-to-right, top-to-bottom)
  • Never use positive tabindex values—they break natural flow
  • Hidden content must be removed from tab sequence with tabindex='-1'
  • Keyboard traps are only acceptable inside active modals with a working Escape path

Check

Test that all interactive elements are keyboard accessible, focus order matches visual/reading order, hidden content is not focusable, and no keyboard traps exist except in modals with proper escape handling.

Fix

Ensure tab order follows DOM order matching visual layout. Use tabindex='-1' to remove hidden elements from focus. Avoid positive tabindex values. Ensure off-screen or display:none content cannot receive focus.

Explain

Explain how logical focus order helps keyboard users navigate efficiently, why hidden elements must be removed from the tab sequence to avoid confusion, and how focus management affects users of screen readers and switch devices.

Code Review

Review the rendered markup and interactive states that affect Enable keyboard navigation for all elements. Flag exact elements, roles, labels, focus behavior, or keyboard interactions that violate the rule, and note how to verify the fix with browser accessibility tooling or assistive tech.

Questions

Does this skill work with screen readers?
The skill focuses on keyboard accessibility, focus management, and shortcuts. It does not test screen reader output or announce behavior.
Can it test mobile touch interfaces?
No, the skill is for keyboard navigation on web pages and UI components. It does not cover touch or gesture interactions.
What kinds of issues can it find?
It can find elements that cannot be reached with Tab, focus order problems, missing focus indicators, and keyboard shortcut conflicts.
Do I need to install anything extra?
You need an agent that supports skills. The skill itself is added to the agent's skill set, and no additional software is required.
