Razorpay Webhooks

SkillCommerce & finance

Receive and verify Razorpay webhooks. Use when setting up Razorpay webhook handlers, debugging X-Razorpay-Signature verification, or handling payment events like payment.captured, payment.failed, order.paid, refund.processed, or subscription.charged.

What this skill tells your AI

The instructions your AI receives, as published by hookdeck/webhook-skills in skills/razorpay-webhooks/SKILL.md and read by ahel’s review.

Razorpay is an India-focused payments platform. It notifies your application of payment lifecycle events (orders, payments, refunds, subscriptions, settlements, disputes) by sending an HTTP POST webhook with a JSON payload to your endpoint.

When to Use This Skill

  • How do I receive Razorpay webhooks?
  • How do I verify the X-Razorpay-Signature header?
  • Why is my Razorpay webhook signature verification failing?
  • How do I handle payment.captured, order.paid, or subscription.charged events?
  • Understanding Razorpay event types and payload structure

Verification (core)

Razorpay signs each webhook with HMAC-SHA256 over the raw request body, hex-encoded, in the X-Razorpay-Signature header. The key is the webhook secret you set in the dashboard (not your API key). Verify the raw body — do not JSON.parse before verifying.

The official razorpay Node SDK exposes a static helper:

const Razorpay = require('razorpay');

// rawBody: the raw HTTP body as a string/Buffer (NOT parsed JSON)
// signature: value of the X-Razorpay-Signature header
// secret: RAZORPAY_WEBHOOK_SECRET from the dashboard webhook config
const isValid = Razorpay.validateWebhookSignature(rawBody, signature, secret);
// returns true/false

No Node SDK (e.g. Python/FastAPI)? Compute it manually with a timing-safe compare:

import hmac, hashlib
expected = hmac.new(secret.encode(), raw_body, hashlib.sha256).hexdigest()
is_valid = hmac.compare_digest(expected, signature_header)

For complete handlers with route wiring, event dispatch, and tests, see:

Common Event Types

The event type is in the JSON body's event field (not a header).

EventTriggered When
payment.authorizedPayment authorized but not yet captured
payment.capturedPayment successfully captured
payment.failedPayment attempt failed
order.paidAn order is fully paid
refund.processedA refund has been processed
subscription.chargedA subscription charge succeeded

For the full event reference, see references/overview.md and Razorpay's webhook events docs.

Environment Variables

RAZORPAY_WEBHOOK_SECRET=your_webhook_secret   # From Dashboard → Settings → Webhooks

The webhook secret is a value you choose when creating the webhook in the Razorpay dashboard — it is separate from your API key ID/secret.

Local Development

# Start tunnel (no account needed)

Recommended: webhook-handler-patterns

We recommend installing the webhook-handler-patterns skill alongside this one for handler sequence, idempotency, error handling, and retry logic. Key references (open on GitHub):

  • Handler sequence — Verify first, parse second, handle idempotently third
  • Idempotency — Prevent duplicate processing (Razorpay retries and may deliver duplicates)
  • Error handling — Return codes, logging, dead letter queues
  • Retry logic — Provider retry schedules, backoff patterns
