About this skill
Use when advocating for your own inclusion in a mission or opportunity after being overlooked. Applies the 'point in a sheath' (锥处囊中) metaphor, reframing obscurity as lack of opportunity rather than lack of ability, and requesting a chance for talent to emerge.

Overview
A procedure for advocating for inclusion in important missions when you have been overlooked, using the "point in a sheath" metaphor.
Steps
- Identify the opportunity - Learn of a mission requiring personnel
- Assess the gap - Determine if there is an unfilled position
- Approach the decision-maker directly - Request inclusion to fill the gap
- Anticipate rejection based on track record - Prepare for skepticism about your abilities
- Reframe the narrative - Argue that lack of opportunity, not lack of ability, explains obscurity
- Use the sheath metaphor - Explain that talent only becomes visible when given opportunity (like a point in a sheath)
- Request a chance to prove yourself - Ask to be placed where your abilities can emerge
Key Argument
"I have not yet been given the opportunity to demonstrate my abilities. Place me in a position where I can act, and my true capabilities will emerge fully."
Expected Outcome
Inclusion in the mission, opportunity to demonstrate capabilities, eventual recognition of talent
Validation
- Confirm the self-recommendation reframes the narrative as opportunity gap rather than ability gap — if the pitch sounds like bragging, it will be rejected
- Verify the sheath metaphor resonated: the decision-maker should understand that placing you in the position will reveal capability that was hidden, not create capability from nothing
- After inclusion, track whether demonstrated performance matches the promise — the metaphor creates high expectations that must be met to maintain credibility
